Nutrition for Vision

For those at risk of age-related vision loss:

Nutrition plays an important role in the health of your eyes. Emerging science suggests that proper nutrition is critical to maintaining eye health, whatever your age. Unfortunately most Americans don't get the nutrition they need through diet alone so adding a vitamin and mineral supplement to your diet may be helpful in protecting your eyes as you age.

For people with AMD:

There's hope in the fight against this disease! The 10-year Age-Related Eye Disease Study proved that patients most at risk for developing moderate to advanced AMD decreased that risk by 25% and reduced the risk of associated vision loss by 19% by taking a high-potency antioxidant supplement every day.**

What is the AREDS trial?

AREDS stands for Age-Related Eye Disease Study, and if you live with age-related macular degeneration, the results should be of interest to you.

The National Eye Institute (NEI), of the National Institutes of Health, conducted the 10-year AREDS trial to test the effectiveness of a high-potency vitamin and mineral supplement on eye health and vision. It is the most exhaustive clinical study to date on AMD.

The AREDS trial showed that by taking this unique formula of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, AMD patients most at risk for developing moderate to advanced AMD decreased that risk by 25%, and also reduced the risk of significant loss in visual acuity by 19%.

The patented supplement formula used in this landmark study is available from Bausch & Lomb in their PreserVision® AREDS Formula vitamin and mineral supplements.

The AREDS2 trial

The first AREDS trial, described above, was conducted in the early 1990s. Since then, many other dietary ingredients have come on the scene that may be of additional benefit in controlling and treating AMD. Because of this, the National Eye Institute (NEI) is planning the AREDS2 trial. AREDS2 will test the effectiveness of some of these promising substances on the progression of AMD, focusing on omega-3 fatty acids, lutein, and zeaxanthin, which were not included in the original study.

Role of Lutein & Omega-3

Lutein and Omega-3 – Key Antioxidants Essential to Healthier Eyes.

The world’s leading eye care professionals are increasingly convinced that lutein (pronounced lu-teen) and omega-3 fatty acids are vital to maintaining eye health. However, the average American receives only a fraction of these powerful antioxidants in their diet.

Lutein is found in dark, leafy vegetables like spinach. But you’d have to eat two bowls of raw spinach every day to get 6 mg of lutein – the daily dose leading doctors recommend.

Multivitamins contain just 0.25 mg of lutein. So you’d have to take 24 multivitamins to get the amount your eyes need. Taking Bausch & Lomb Ocuvite® Adult 50+ eye vitamins, which contain 6 mg of high-quality lutein as well as omega-3 fatty acids, is the easiest way to ensure your eyes get the essential antioxidants they need. Ocuvite® Adult 50+ also contains vitamin C, vitamin E, zinc, and copper – everything you need to maintain eye health now – and in the future.*
